Signs of ADHD in Adults

Adult ADHD often looks different than it does in children. Common signs include:

  • Trouble focusing, or hyperfocus on the wrong things
  • Procrastination and difficulty starting or finishing tasks
  • Disorganization and frequent forgetfulness
  • Restlessness, impulsivity, or trouble sitting still
  • Chronic lateness and poor time management
  • Difficulty keeping up with work, finances, or relationships

How We Diagnose and Treat Adult ADHD

Care begins with a thorough evaluation of your history, symptoms, prior treatments, and, when helpful, validated rating scales and a review of records. If ADHD is confirmed, we build a medication management plan suited to you, considering both stimulant and non-stimulant options. Formal psychological testing is needed only if a stimulant becomes part of the plan, because stimulants are controlled substances closely regulated by the DEA. Testing you’ve already had, including as a child, counts, and if another prescriber already has you on a stimulant, Dr. Holsey will review their records and can often continue it. Every prescribing decision is made case by case at your provider’s clinical judgment.

For long-term controlled medications such as stimulants, at least one in-person visit at our Norman, OK or Frisco, TX office is required; follow-ups can then continue by telehealth.

Stimulant medication and psychological testing

Dr. Holsey evaluates and treats adult ADHD alongside depression, anxiety, and the other conditions the practice treats. The best first step is to meet with him. Trouble focusing, forgetfulness, or restlessness is often driven by depression, anxiety, poor sleep, or something else entirely, and a first visit sorts out what’s really going on. You don’t need any testing to schedule an appointment.

Formal psychological testing is required only before a stimulant medication — Adderall, Vyvanse, Ritalin, Concerta, Focalin, and similar — is started, because stimulants are controlled substances closely regulated by the DEA. Many patients do well with treatment that requires no testing, including non-stimulant ADHD medication. If a stimulant is a reasonable option for you, Dr. Holsey will refer you to a local psychologist for testing, and you’ll meet again afterward to review the results and decide on treatment together.

Already on a stimulant? If another prescriber currently has you on one, Dr. Holsey will review that prescriber’s records and can often continue it. We’ll ask you to sign a release so we can request them.

What counts as testing: a formal psychological or neuropsychological evaluation performed by a licensed psychologist, at any age. Testing done in childhood counts. Please fax the report to 936-244-4621 before your visit or bring it with you. A screening questionnaire, or a diagnosis from a previous prescriber on its own, is not testing.

Completing testing is required before a stimulant can be considered; it doesn’t guarantee one. The decision is made at a visit, after Dr. Holsey has reviewed the report with you. This applies to new patients and to current patients who later ask about a stimulant.
